Laurie Currie, ACAT, M.AmSAT

Laurie received her training at the American Center for the Alexander Technique (ACAT) in New York City, obtaining her teaching certification in 1993. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from SUNY-Hunter College. Laurie has been involved in dance and movement for over 30 years, including the study of modern dance, ballet, tai chi, yoga, Pilates and Feldenkrais. She is still an avid dancer. Since her first encounter with the Alexander Technique in 1987, she has preferred it to all other methods because of its comprehensive benefits and profound simplicity. Laurie has presented the Technique to the music department of Western Connecticut State University, as well as to local fitness centers. She maintains a private practice in Mahopac, New York (Putnam County) and in New York City. She loves working with people of all ages and backgrounds, and enjoys seeing the wide range of positive ways the Technique impacts her students' lives.

What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a gentle, hands-on method for changing unwanted postural and movement habits that keep people from functioning at their best. It works exceptionally well in relieving pain, strain, tension and stress, improving coordination and posture, and enhancing all types of performance skills. It was developed by an Australian actor named Frederick Mathias Alexander (1869-1955). The underlying principle of the Technique is that how we use ourselves in activity affects how we function, to a more significant extent than many people realize. Alexander devised a unique process that has been proven to be extraordinarily effective in helping people regain the natural ease and freedom of movement they were born with. The Technique has been endorsed by Nobel laureate scientists as well as prominent physicians, philosophers and performers, and is taught worldwide today.
