All the first generation Alexander Technique teachers said pretty much the same thing – basically don’t contaminate a self-direction with doing ANYTHING to help. Even a direction like “I’m letting (or allowing) my neck be free”, which sounds great, assumes one knows HOW to let without doing anything, which in my experience is rarely the case. And so a subtle bit of doing creeps in.

The same holds for anticipating what will happen when thinking an Alexander Technique direction.  And even being interested in what happens.

Just the thought and NOTHING else.

Simple, but for most of us, not easy.
